We’d love to have books recommended – please tell us the name of the book, the author (if known) and tell us why you recommend the book. Thanks. :) Here’s a link to the corresponding page from last year’s grade’s blog: Books.

 We are currently reading:

Then, by Morris GleitzmanThen, by Morris Gleitzman.

The sequel to Once, this book is best for older readers (mature grade 5/6 or secondary). But it’s wonderful, suspenseful and will keep a whole grade engaged for hours!

We have finished reading:

OnceOnce, by Morris Gleitzman

This is my favorite book ever (for now, anyway). It’s sad, funny, happy, uplifting, shocking, thought-provoking – just wonderful. And I hear there’s going to be a sequel out on June 2. It’s called, “Then”. I wonder what the cover will look like – I really liked the “Once” cover.

Once is a retell of the Holocaust in 1942. The Nazis captured a troop of Jews and took them to a Death Camo. A third of the Jews died in the Death Camps.

We recommend this book for grade 5/6 and over.

It’s a great book and we give it 4.5 stars out of 5.

George’s Marvellous Medicine George’s Marvellous Medicine, by Roald Dahl.

This book is funny. It uses lots of good description to explain the characters, especially the cranky, old, annoying, wrinkly, grumpy grandma. You could try George’s solution with your own grumpy grandparents, although you might find yourself in jail since his answer is even meaner than his grandma!

The best part of this book was when grandma disappeared – the mum was a bit sad, but not for long. We recommend this book to grades 2, 3 and 4 especially, but it was okay for grade 5/6 as well. It was quite easy to read.

We give this book 3.5 stars!

Wish, by Felice Arena Wish, by Felice Arena

This book is about a boy by the name of Seb. Her wants his mum to get well because she is sick. His brother Alex makes up a way to get a wish; Seb thinks it’s true but it’s not.

The best bit of the book is: the wish comes true even though his brother Alex made it up.

The worst bit of the book is: they think Seb and Alex’s mum is going to die.

We think this book is great for grade 4-6 W give it 4.5 stars out of 5.

HolesHoles, by Louis Sachar.

Stanley Yelnats has a choice; jail or Camp Green Lake. He has been accused of stealing a valuable pair of shoes. So he chooses Camp Green Lake, not knowing what he’s getting himself into. He meets a boy whose nick name is Zero. Each morning they all wake before dawn and struggle to dig a 5 foot deep and 5 foot wide hole before the hottest part of the day. The lake has long ago dried up, and the heat is almost unbearable. Trouble starts when Stanley digs up a hundred years old. Carved in it are the initials of a famous outlaw.

Little LunchLittle Lunch, by Danny Katz

Little Lunch TwoLittle Lunch Two, by Danny Katz

Illustrator: Mitch Vane

Little Lunch is about 10 kids and a teacher who have amazing adventures in just 15 minutes!

Little Lunch is funny, adventurous and is always making people laugh.

These stories include The Monkey Bars, The Bench Beside the Bin and The Shelter Shed. Our favorite is the Bench Beside the Bin, because it’s hilarious. Manny has the biggest and best sandwich in the world. The kids are thrilled by the fillings, until Manny eats some strange little round purple things. What could they be?

I give this book

4 out of 5 smilies because it is hilarious!

Little Lunch Three by Danny KatzLittle Lunch Three by Danny Katz

Characters:

  • Manny – always eating.
  • Max and Elsa – they’re the twins
  • Melanie Applebum – always sucking on her hanky.
  • Rory – always getting in trouble
  • Mrs Gonsha – has a big bum!
  • Atticus Busby – nerd, smart.
  • Battie – always getting stuff of his shoes.
  • Amba – the thinker.
  • Debra-Jo Woo – she loves the monkey bars.
  • Tamara Noodle – always running away and screaming [at everything].

There are 3 exciting chapters in this book.

The first one is called – Under the Tree near the Oval -it was the twins’ birthday, but something went wrong, what was it?

The second chapter is called – The Lost and Found Box – Atticus Busby was doing a very strange trick, but what happened next?

The third chapter is called – The Bubblers – It was a boiling hot day, HOT, HOT, HOT, too hot to play on the play ground, so what did they do at play lunch and lunch?

By the way there are five different books and we think that you guys should read all of these books too. They are excellent for children and even adults.

Little Lunch FourLittle Lunch Four, by Danny Katz

This book has 3 small stories about a normal problem that can change into one big problem.

Lost your lunch over the school gate, how would you get it? Bored silly and you only have one ball, what would you play? Singing and you hit someone, what would you do? The answer lies in here of what these kids would do.

Ten kids, three stories, one playground.

We give it …..

Little Lunch Five by Danny KatzLittle Lunch Five by Danny Katz

Little Lunch five is a book of three very funny and clever stories written by Danny Katz and illustrated by Mitch Vane. Little Lunch makes recess sound so funny, you see lots can happen in 15 minutes’ time.

In Little Lunch Five the best story is The Old Climbing Tree. I like this one best because it stands out from the rest for laughter. Poor Battie gets scared by a caterpillar that he thinks it is poisonous and will kill anyone near it. Max and Elsa save him, luckily.

I think that Little Lunch is the best and Danny Katz should write more stories. I rate Little Lunch Five 5 stars out of  5.

(Danny, write more please!)
